FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCTOBER 5, 2015
DULUTH, GA – Credit union leaders from Georgia were in Washington, D.C. this September to meet with members of Congress with a new resource in hand – their phones. In advance of the visits, Georgia Credit Union Affiliates (GCUA) created a new mobile site designed to provide legislative staffers key information on Georgia credit unions.
The site houses information on credit unions, the members in the district, the positive influence credit unions have on the state and the issues in Congress important to the industry. The tool was designed as an introduction to credit unions and bills for the millennial-aged legislative aides in Washington, D.C., who often do not have the luxury of time to dig into the specifics on each issue of every industry with representatives that visit their offices.
Rolled out to the legislative offices in advance of the Hill visits, the site also proved to be a resource for credit union individuals to quickly access information on the issues prior to meetings. It is a far cry from carrying pages of talking points and briefing sheets. The applicability extends beyond the physical Hill visits, as legislative staffs now have the issues of importance and quick sound bites from credit unions at their fingertips.
Providing elected officials with information on how they can help credit union members is the essence of advancing legislative initiatives. The mobile site does so in a way that breaks down the 15-plus high priority bills to four areas:
- Protect member data
- Achieve sensible regulations (and not over burdensome or duplicative requirements)
- Allow credit unions the ability to provide additional credit to their members
- Maintain the financial strength of the credit union charter
Prior the launch of the mobile site, it was reviewed by some Congressional staffers, who affirmed this was the route to go for credit unions. Nothing can replace the in-person interaction and relationships built during the visits. The mobile site provides another valuable resource adding to the long history of interaction the industry has with members of Congress, using technology to articulate the credit union position.
